Why this authority is listed

These official sources support the authority listed here. Lookup instructions and licensing rules cite their own sources where available.

Before you search

Evidence reviewed

Start at the Board of Registered Nursing’s License Verification page and use its DCA License Search or Click to Verify License link. The Board directs users there to check the most recent RN license status and available public documents about actions taken. The data comes from BRN’s BreEZe licensing records. Disciplinary documents, when available, appear beneath the license status; if they are missing for a discipline-related matter, contact the Board’s Enforcement Program.

What the result shows

Evidence reviewed

DCA License Search provides the current RN license status and links to available public disciplinary documents below that status. The Board of Registered Nursing supplies this primary-source data from its BreEZe licensing system. Employers can also subscribe to Nursys e-Notify for nurse licensure status alerts and reports.

Formal verification

Evidence reviewed

For a current or former California RN applying for a license in another state, request RN verification through Nursys. This process is not for applicants seeking their initial California RN license. Nursys RN verification does not include advanced practice certifications. For those, sign in to BreEZe and submit a Verification Request under the RN license, rather than under the advanced practice certification. The Board charges $100 per receiving state or country for this direct advanced-practice verification. All verifications completed directly by BRN include both the RN license and any California advanced practice certifications, so a separate request or fee for each held certification is not required. For verification to another country, obtain that country’s nursing-board application packet, provide the destination information in BreEZe’s Request for License Letter, and pay $100 per destination country. BRN sends the completed verification directly to the receiving nursing board by email or mail, rather than returning it to the requester. For an employer’s confirmation of renewal, use the separate Verification for Employer service through BreEZe or by mail. It costs $20 per request and includes only the name, license number, issue date, expiration date and status. For a mailed employer request, enclose a check or money order payable to BRN and send it to California Board of Registered Nursing, PO Box 944210, Sacramento, CA 94244-2100. This employer letter cannot substitute for verification to another state or country.

If the result looks wrong

Evidence reviewed

For a discipline-related matter, contact the Board’s Enforcement Program if the expected documents are unavailable below the license status. BRN says the lookup reflects its primary-source records, but human or mechanical errors and delays in posting updates remain possible. The organization relying on a record remains responsible for its decision.

Multistate practice

Evidence reviewed

A current or former California RN applying for licensure elsewhere uses Nursys for verification to another state. Advanced practice certification requires a separate request directly to BRN through BreEZe. For a foreign nursing board, obtain that board’s application packet and request California verification with the destination country information. The verification is sent directly to the receiving board. Follow up with that board within three months; BRN only resends a lost verification within three months of its original mailing. These are verification steps for an application to the receiving jurisdiction.

What license statuses mean

Active

Required to practice nursing in California. Active renewal requires the appropriate renewal fee and proof of 30 hours of continuing education.

Delinquent

The RN allowed the license to expire. If it expired less than eight years ago, return requires the delinquent renewal fee and proof of 30 hours of continuing education completed in the prior two years; after eight years, proof of competency through an active license elsewhere or retaking the licensing exam is also required.

Inactive

The renewal fee has been paid, but the RN has not completed the required 30 hours of continuing education. An inactive California RN license does not authorize nursing practice.

Retired

The RN applied to set the license to retired. A retired licensee may provide limited free nursing services in qualifying public-health programs under adequate licensed-RN supervision, but may not perform activity that requires an active RN or APRN license.
