Official lookup, explained

Check a license with the official state lookup

Every state board publishes its own license search. Choose the state and profession, and we route you to that official government lookup, with reviewed guidance on how the search works and what the result means. No name or license number is entered here.

No name or license number needed. Personal license searches take place on the official authority’s website.

Checking a contractor, electrician or HVAC credential before hiring? The guided license check walks through the official search step by step for reviewed combinations. Renewing your own trade or beauty license? The renewal planner tracks reviewed hours, topics and deadlines on your device.

How a license check works

Three things to know before you search

  1. Only the issuing board holds the record. A license is verified on the official state search, never on this site. We link to that search and explain how to use it.
  2. Status words differ by board. “Delinquent”, “inactive” and “expired” mean different things in different states. Reviewed guides quote each board’s own definition with its source.
  3. Some professions are not licensed statewide. Where a trade is licensed locally, registered rather than licensed, or not confirmed yet, the guide says so instead of sending you to the wrong search.
