24 months
Pennsylvania registered nurse licences renew on a two-year cycle, and the Board assigns each nurse one of four expiration dates: April 30 or October 31, in either an even-numbered or an odd-numbered year. Your own date is the one on your licence, not a single statewide deadline. Licensed practical nurse licences instead expire on June 30 of each biennium in even-numbered years. The Board sends a renewal notice to each active licensee before the expiration date, but the notice is a courtesy and not receiving it does not excuse a late renewal.
30 hours
At least 2 of the 30 hours in Board-approved continuing education in organ and tissue donation and the recovery process, from May 1, 2026; At least 2 hours of approved training in child abuse recognition and reporting
$122 for the biennial renewal of a registered nurse licence. Related Board fees in the same schedule: reactivating an inactive or lapsed licence after five years or longer costs $130, restoration after suspension or revocation $60, verification of licensure $45, and verification with history $50.
A Pennsylvania registered nurse who has not completed the continuing education required by the end of the biennial renewal period may not practise professional nursing until that education is finished and the licence has been renewed, reinstated or reactivated. Getting a lapsed licence back means filing a reinstatement application and documenting 30 hours of continuing education, including at least two hours of approved child abuse recognition and reporting training, and from May 1, 2026, two hours on organ and tissue donation. Reactivating an inactive licence follows the same evidence requirement.
Renew online or by mailing the completed form to the Board's administrative office. On the application a registered nurse discloses any licence to practise nursing or an allied health profession in another state, territory, possession or country; pays the biennial renewal fee; verifies completion of the continuing education required for the preceding biennium; confirms at least two hours of approved child abuse recognition and reporting training; and discloses any discipline imposed by a state licensing board in the previous biennium along with pending criminal charges, a conviction, a guilty or nolo contendere plea, or admission into probation without verdict or accelerated rehabilitative disposition. When contacting the Board, identify yourself by full name, current address and licence number.
