A journeyman electrician applicant needs 8,000 hours of supervised on-the-job training for licensure; TDLR permits examination after 7,000 documented hours under a Texas-licensed master electrician.
TDLR authorizes examination after reviewing the completed application and receiving the fee. PSI administers the electrician examinations, and applicants have one year from application receipt to satisfy all licensing requirements, including passing the examination.
The journeyman electrician application has a nonrefundable $30 fee and must be submitted by mail.
TDLR conducts a criminal-history background check on every applicant and renewal applicant. Covered convictions or pleas require the Criminal History Questionnaire, and convictions are reviewed case by case.
TDLR says a criminal-history review can take one to six weeks depending on the applicant's history.
Use TDLR's official Out of State/Country Applicants guidance when applying with out-of-state or out-of-country electrician credentials.
