    DIR accepts an electrician certification card number, application tracking number or trainee number. Enter the six numeric digits from a certification card or exam authorization tracking number. A trainee number may contain four to six numeric digits. DIR describes this numeric search as providing limited information. Its separate name-with-number search uses part of the last name and part of the driver license or identification number recorded on the application.

Active for a trainee means the person meets requirements and is registered as an electrician trainee; it is not the same label as Certified for an electrician. Inactive trainee status can reflect unrenewed expiration, withdrawal from classes, or failure to enroll. Use the exact category and definition rather than treating every current record as the same credential.

    California’s FAQ says an electrician moving from another state must be certified before starting work that requires California electrician certification; there is no grace period. A short project does not remove that requirement for electricians working for C-10 licensed contractors. An electrician license from another state makes the holder eligible to sit for the California test, but the FAQ still requires testing and certification. Scope matters: California distinguishes individual electrician certification from a C-10 contractor license. A contractor working under their own qualifying C-10 license has an exemption described in the FAQ, while a C-10 license holder working as an employee under another C-10 contractor must be certified. Non-qualifying partners or officers must also obtain certification for work that requires it; only the qualifying person who took the contractor examination may rely on that contractor-license exemption. Review the FAQ’s scope and exceptions before using either an out-of-state license or a California contractor license as proof of individual certification.
