A contractor-license qualifier must be at least 18 and have the experience and skills to manage construction-business activities, including field supervision.
The qualifying individual must document at least four full years of verifiable journey-level, foreman, supervisor, or contractor experience in the classification being sought during the ten years before applying.
Applicants required to take a trade or law examination can prepare with CSLB's applicable examination study guides.
The original application fee for one classification is $450; the separate initial license fee is $200 for a sole owner or $350 for a non-sole owner.
Every contractor-license applicant must submit a full set of fingerprints so CSLB can conduct a criminal background check.
Out-of-state hard-copy fingerprint processing takes three to six months or longer; Live Scan is substantially faster.
Out-of-state applicants may seek a California contractor license if qualified; reciprocity agreements with several states can simplify the process.
