Texas Nursing License Renewal

The timely renewal application opens on the first day of the month before the license-expiration month and remains available until the expiration date.

A standard license expires on the last day of the nurse's birth month, in odd-numbered years for an odd birth year and even-numbered years for an even birth year.

20 hours

Nursing jurisprudence and nursing ethics: at least 2 CNE contact hours before the end of every third two-year licensing period. Direct-patient-care nurses must complete an HHSC-approved human trafficking prevention course before the end of every licensing period. Additional targeted requirements depend on the nurse’s practice.

RN: $68; LVN: $45; APRN: $54 for each biennial renewal.

Less than 90 days delinquent: $60 plus the current renewal fee; more than 90 days: $120 plus the current renewal fee.

A Texas nursing license expires and displays delinquent if not renewed by its expiration date. Delinquent status means expired, not discipline. A nurse may not practice in Texas on that license unless holding a valid, active, unencumbered multistate license from another Nurse Licensure Compact state. Texas does not participate in an APRN compact: APRN practice in Texas requires an active Texas APRN license without that exception.

Before submitting a renewal or reactivation application, document compliance with applicable continuing competency requirements in the CE Module: select Add Continuing Education next to the license and follow the instructions.
