- Renewal cycle
- 24 months
- Deadline
- The license expires on the last day of the nurse’s birth month: in odd-numbered years for a nurse born in an odd-numbered year, and even-numbered years for a nurse born in an even-numbered year. The renewal application, fee, and any requested supporting material must be submitted on or before the expiration date.
- Continuing education
- 20 hours: Targeted continuing-education requirements depend on role and practice and can include forensic evidence collection, older-adult or geriatric care, nursing jurisprudence and ethics, human-trafficking prevention, and additional APRN topics. Nurses must check the Board’s current targeted-requirements table for the mandates that apply to them.
- Renewal fee
- RN: $68; LVN: $45; APRN: $54 for each biennial renewal.
- Late fee
- Reactivation from delinquent status costs $60 plus the current renewal fee when delinquent less than 90 days, or $120 plus the current renewal fee when delinquent more than 90 days.
If the license lapses
A license not renewed before its expiration date enters delinquent status. The Board states that a nurse cannot practice or work as a nurse with a delinquent license. This is not a grace period: reactivation and the applicable late fee are required before returning to practice.
Renewal steps
Log in to the Texas Nurse Portal; open the appropriate renewal application; complete every requested section; document compliance with the continuing-competency requirements that apply to the license and practice; submit requested supporting material; pay the applicable processing fee; and submit by the expiration date. The Board advises allowing up to 20 business days for staff review and processing of applications and supporting documents.
