Multistate practice

Evidence reviewed

Ohio has enacted the Nurse Licensure Compact in Revised Code 4723.11. Under the compact, a multistate license issued by a nurse's home state, the party state that is their primary residence, authorizes practice as a registered or licensed practical nurse in every party state through a multistate licensure privilege. A single-state license authorizes practice only in the issuing state. A nurse holding a current, unencumbered multistate license from another compact state can therefore practice in Ohio without an Ohio license, while a nurse whose home state is Ohio applies to the Board for an Ohio multistate license; the Board's rules in Administrative Code chapter 4723-11 set the multistate application and conversion fees.

What published license statuses mean

This is a partial glossary. The full lookup guide remains in progress.

Active

A current or active license is one that is not inactive, suspended, lapsed, or revoked, as the Ohio Board of Nursing defines the term in Administrative Code 4723-7-01. It is the only status that authorizes practice.

Inactive

The nurse asked the Board, electronically or in writing, to place the license on inactive status. A nurse with an inactive license does not hold a current, valid license and must reactivate it before practicing.

Lapsed

The nurse did not meet all renewal requirements, did not ask for inactive status before the expiration date, and the license has expired. A lapsed license must be reinstated, which requires 24 contact hours of continuing education in the 24 months before applying.

Revoked

The Board has revoked the license as a disciplinary sanction under Revised Code 4723.28. When the Board refuses, revokes or refuses to reinstate a license it may specify that the action is permanent, and a person subject to permanent action is forever ineligible for that license type.

Suspended

The Board has suspended the license as a disciplinary sanction under Revised Code 4723.28, which also allows it to deny, revoke, or place restrictions on a license, or to reprimand or otherwise discipline the holder.
