Renewal facts and steps

Deadline

Evidence reviewed

Registered nurse licenses renew in odd-numbered years and licensed practical nurse licenses in even-numbered years. The renewal application is due on September 15 of the renewal year. A late application may be filed until the license lapses; a license that is neither renewed nor placed on inactive status lapses on November 1 of the renewal year.

Renewal fee

Evidence reviewed

Ohio sets its nursing fees as statutory maximums rather than fixed prices. The Board may charge up to $65 to renew a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse licence, up to $135 for an advanced practice registered nurse, and up to $50 to process a late renewal application. Confirm the amount the Board is actually charging on eLicense before paying, because the statute caps the fee and does not fix it.

If the license lapses

Evidence reviewed

A license that is not renewed or classified as inactive lapses on November 1 of the renewal year. A lapsed license does not authorize practice; reinstating it requires an application to the Board and 24 contact hours of continuing education completed in the 24 months immediately before the application date.

Renewal steps

Evidence reviewed

Complete the renewal application the Board provides and submit it with the renewal fee set under Revised Code 4723.08. On the application, report any conviction, plea or judicial finding for a criminal offence that would give the Board grounds to impose sanctions since your last application. A renewal filed after the September 15 due date but before the licence lapses must include the late processing fee. The Board sends a renewal application to every holder of an active licence, mailed to the last known address, except where it already knows the holder is ineligible to renew; not receiving one does not excuse you from the requirement.
